Painting is not only a record of what is in front of me; it is a quiet way of looking at the world.
Slow enough to see
When painting outdoors, the longest part is not the brushwork but the sitting and looking. Ten minutes changes the colour of a whole mountain — and walking past, we see none of it.

The ones that failed
Behind every finished picture are several that never made it. They are not waste; the hand has to be wrong many times before it knows how light the right stroke should be.
留白On empty space
Ink painting taught me that not painting is also painting. The blank on the paper is not unfinished — it is where the viewer breathes.
